Why it is Dangerous to be Unequally Yoked

Who you associate with is a determinant of whether God will act on your behalf or if he will be silent over your case.

God told Abraham in Genesis 12:1 to leave his father’s house to a place where he would show him, but Abraham went with Lot his nephew. The fact that Lot was with Abraham hindered God from delivering his promise to him. But as soon as Lot was separated from him he remembered his promise.

And the LORD said to Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now your eyes, and look from the place where you are northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:For all the land which you see, to you will I give it, and to your seed for ever. Genesis 13:14-15

It was God’s mercy that caused Lot and Abraham’s men to fight so that he could separate Lot from him, else  Lot would have remained with Abraham and God would have also delayed his promise to Abraham.

Is been unequally yoked really dangerous?

Being unequally yoked does not only apply to marriage or getting married to an unbeliever but it also affects our friends and associates. God wants to bless some people but because of their friends and associates he will not or he might delay.

It is either the person’s sins makes it difficult for God to get involved in your case or because he knows if he gives you what you are praying for with that person still in your life it will result in more harm than good.

Who are your friends? Who are your business partners? Who are you planning to get married to? Or who are you married to already? Think.

Bible Verse of The Day – 2 Corinthians 6 vs 14

What Does unequally yoked mean

Unequally Yoked in Marriage/Relationship.

Been unequally yoked might not be such a big deal especially when you think you you’re in love with the person. You may ask; what is the big deal with getting married to an unbeliever?

Danger of unequally yoked

Who cares if I get married to an unbeliever as long as we love ourselves, isn’t that the only thing that matters? Does it really matter if i get married to or date an unbeliever?

Oh yes it matters, in fact it matters a lot more than you think. God cares and that is the reason why he is warning you beforehand. Love isn’t all that matters when it comes to marriage.

An unbeliever will definitely lead you out of God’s plan whether you like it or not. Getting married or dating an unbeliever is directly disobeying God’s instructions.

Be ye not unequally yoked together with Unbelievers, for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? What communion hath light with darkness? And what Concord hath Christ with Belial? What part hath he that believeth with an infidel (an unbeliever)? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God: as God hath said, i will dwell in them and walk in them, and i will be their God and they shall be my people. (2 Corinthians 6:14-16).

This is a clear instruction. People who make it in marriage do so by obeying the instructions and principles laid down by God concerning marriage.

If you must succeed in your marriage relationship, you must observe and obey divine instructions and to this end, the bible instructs: do not be unequally yokes together with unbelievers.

God sees the end from the beginning, and because he doesn’t want you destroyed that’s why he is warning you beforehand.

When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee: the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, Seven nations greater and mightier than thou. In verse 3 and 4 he said; ‘’neither shall thou make marriages with them, thy daughter thou shall not give unto his son nor his daughter shall thou take unto thy son’’. For they will turn away thy son from following me that they may serve other gods, so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you and destroy you suddenly.(Deuteronomy 7:1-4).

These seven nations were unbelieving nations and God warned the children of Israel right before they even entered the land. He didn’t want excuses like you didn’t tell us, or we were not aware and so he informed them right before they entered the land. If he wasn’t a merciful father he wouldn’t have informed you beforehand.

This was in the old covenant (Testament), and he warned us again in the new covenant in 2 Corinthians 6 vs 14. If it’s not important he wouldn’t have repeated it.

Why it is Dangerous to be Unequally Yoked

1. Dating or Getting Married to an Unbeliever is Directly Disobeying God

This is telling God directly that you will not follow his will. You can ask any believer you know that is married to an unbeliever if they’ll be sincere enough to tell the truth, you’ll know how it is really. Then you’ll know that the price for disobedience is costly and you can’t afford to disobey. You can never disobey God and have peace.

You can also ask King Solomon. Solomon was the wisest king on earth. He was a very rich king and even with his wisdom he was never proud, he maintained a perfect heart with God. But with all his experience with God he still had love for strange women and his love for strange women (unbelievers) landed him into trouble.

He served other gods at the later part of his life because of these numerous strange women he had which led to the division of his kingdom, and also in the next year God raised an adversary against Solomon. And his end wasn’t as perfect as his beginning because he missed it along the line (1 Kings 11:1-13).

Samson repeatedly sought for unbelieving women which eventually destroyed his life in the end. (Judges 14 and 16).

Dating or getting married to an unbeliever who does not serve God, love him, or submit to his will is directly disobeying God and this can lead you astray.

2. Without Oneness of Spirit Intimacy is Impossible

Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh. (Genesis 2:24). Cleaving is born out of intimacy and intimacy from oneness of spirit. And they shall become one flesh. Not been tied together physically to become one but being joined and tied together in the spirit to become one.

The spirit that operates in the life of an unbeliever is different from the one that operates in you as a believer. Since the both spirits are not the same how will you even agree with each other? And you know two cannot walk together except they agree. (Amos 3:3). Where will the oneness come from? It’s not possible because light and darkness cannot stay together. It will be disastrous because a house that is divided against itself cannot stand. (Matthew 12:25 Mark 3:25)

3. Your Body is the Temple of The God

Your body is the temple or sanctuary where the Holy Spirit dwells. And what agreement hath the Temple of God with idols? For ye are the Temple of the living God, has God hath said, I will dwell in them and walk in them, and I will be their God and they shall be my people.(2 Corinthians 6:16).

If you then be the Temple of God why do you want to intentionally invite darkness to the temple of the Holy Spirit?  How on earth do you think you’ll have peace living with darkness being a light, whether you like it or not the two will never agree, one will need to give way for the other to rule. The Holy Spirit will never be the center of such Union. What is the essence of the union if the holy Spirit is not the center of that union.

Conclusion

Sometimes, some Christians tend to play smarter than God. They think they are wiser than God and that they can help him. You hear such Christians say: I’ll change him when I get married to him. If you can’t change him before marriage what makes you think you can change him after marriage? Are you the Holy Spirit? Who told you that you have the power to change him or her? You can only do the praying, it is the duty of the Holy Spirit to convict, compel and convert.

Besides God knew all of this and still he told us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. Would you rather obey God or your own selfish desire?
